sat 11am: coney island polar bear club new year’s day plunge: daredevils can dive into 2022 at this annual community dip in the icy atlantic. registration tables will be located at the boardwalk at stillwell avenue. free to watch, $25 suggested donation for participants will benefit local organizations. >>

sat 11am: new year’s day hikes in brooklyn: start the new year off on the right foot with a hike through prospect park led by urban park rangers, or a guided tour along the gowanus shoreline led by the gowanus dredgers. free-$10.

sat 11am-midnight: the poetry project’s 48th annual new year’s day marathon: get well-versed during this 13-hour stream of live and pre-recorded performances by 160+ poets, performers, dancers, and musicians. free (donations will benefit the project). >>

sun + 1/9: last chance to ride these historic 1960s subway cars: the brightliners, a fleet of r-32 trains named for their shiny, unpainted exteriors, will ride off into the sunset after four more rides on january 2nd and 9th, 2022. before the model is retired, you can catch a ride on these stainless-steel beauties, which have set the scene in films like joker, bridge of spies, and spider-man: homecoming, on their last runs on the f, d, and q lines. >>
