French-born singer, bandleader, and songwriter Elizabeth Bougerol (of the Hot Sardines) celebrates her self-titled album at Joe’s Pub with a joyous night of era-spanning jazz. With rhythm, brass, three-part harmony, and “that wonderful voice” (Scott Simon, NPR), the record reimagines classics tied to Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Rickie Lee Jones, and The Platters, alongside gems from Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, nestled inside new, lush arrangements from Emmy winner J. Walter Hawkes.
Elizabeth has become one of the leading voices in a new generation of women redefining the jazz singer, blending classic sounds with an irreverent, modern voice and a storyteller’s eye for the music’s history. Elizabeth is the co-founder and creative force behind the Hot Sardines, the “potent and assured” (The New York Times) jazz-revival ensemble that has played from the Newport Jazz Festival to Carnegie Hall. Her solo project brings a fresh, more personal approach to vintage sounds, and deepens the audience connection WBGO’s Nate Chinen has called “the secret sauce” of the Sardines’ appeal.
